Iraj Etessam, is an emeritus professor of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Tehran and one of Iran’s most recognized designers.

At Tehran University, Etessam was the Vice Dean for the School of Fine Arts, the Director of the graduate and Ph.D program and the Chairman of the Department of Urban Planning. He is currently Chair of the Department of Architecture at Islamic Azad University. He has also taught at the University of Washington, Seattle; the University of Stettin in Poland and King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Etessam is also a practicing architect and planner. He began his professional career by establishing EMCO, Architects and Town Planners Collaborative in Tehran which then expanded with four branches in other Iranian cities and nearly 300 employees. He was also the founder of THE FORUM INTERNATIONAL (TFI), a design and development consultancy firm based in Seattle, Washington. Currently he is active as the principal architect and president of ETESSAM ASSOCIATES, the Design section of TFI, with architectural, planning and interior design projects for clients in the Middle East, Africa and the United States.

He is the author of several books and articles in Persian and English, and his books serve as a major source for anyone interested in studying contemporary architecture in Iran.
